New Year's Resolutions - 12/30/2009

You either love them or hate them...the beloved or dreaded New Year's Resolutions list. Yes, most people fall off the wagon pretty quickly after making them and really, do we need to wait until the new year to make a change? That said, we can't help looking at the new year as a chance to do and learn more...and of course, listen to more music. The holidays wrecked havoc on our blog and the music we try to find and comment on. Time with families and filling your orders had to take priority. So, in light of the upcoming new year, we are back to looking for new and interesting music.

Check out Rolling Stone's list of the top 25 albums of 2009. We were pleased to see that Monsters of Folk made the list after we commented on it in our blog back in November. We still listen to that album at least a couple of times a week.

Somehow, we missed the new U2 album that they listed as the #1 album of the year...gotta add that to the list of albums to check out, as well as Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix...name your album or band something like that and I get sucked into seeing what you are all about pretty quickly!

Spin This! - Playlist for the week of 11/9/09 - 11/9/2009

You never know where you will encounter your next muscial obsession. For me, it happened when I was looking at the upcoming shows at The National, where I saw a banner for the band Monsters of Folk. With a name like that, I couldn't help but look them up. I mean, really? Were they being sarcastic about folk music in general? Were they really monsters of metal? Did I even care?

As a matter of fact, I did! A mix of folk, indie, and country, I ended up in love with the very first song I downloaded, "The Sandman, the Brakeman, and Me". I actually ended up listening to it over and over again before moving on to the next song. It would actually make a great song for a movie soundtrack.

If you like what you hear and happen to be in Richmond, VA tomorrow night, they will be playing at the Landmark Theater at 8pm.

Spin This! - Playlist for the week of 10/15/09 - 10/15/2009

Watching the movie Chocolat introduced us to the music of Django Reinhardt. We adored the movie but were blown away by the music. At the time, we were planning our wedding reception and toyed with the idea of trying to hire a jazz guitarist to play. We settled for Limewire and an iPod.

Django Reinhardt was a gypsy jazz guitarist known for his innovative and distinctive style. His youth was spent in gypsy encampments close to Paris and he played the banjo, guitar, and violin from an early age. Although he could neither read or write music and was barely literate, he influenced many of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, including: Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Jerry Garcia, Peter Frampton, Jimi Hendrix, and Les Paul.

This mix has a few of our favorite Django Reinhardt tunes, as well as the songs from the Chocolat Soundtrack that started all of this. We have also included some other gypsy jazz musicians that we have come to know and love.

We hope you enjoy!

Don't want to be in the high school band? How about learn guitar instead? - 10/4/2009

This is a story from the local newspaper here in town about Chesterfield Middle School.  They wanted to reach out to students with a music offering that appealed to kids who were not interested in the traditional school music program.  You can read the full article here:
